Join me in supporting WriteGirl! I have been a WriteGirl supporter for more than two decades.

WriteGirl helps give teen girls and gender-expansive youth the power of their voice by matching women writers with teen girls for one-on-one mentoring and group creative writing workshops. Founded in 2001, WriteGirl now works with 1,000 teens annually around the world, including in Nigeria, Cameroon, Belize and Afghanistan. WriteGirl envisions a world where all teens live, write, and speak boldly as they become inspiring, transformative leaders, driven to effect positive change in their communities and the world.

You should hear the success stories of WriteGirl alums who are blazing trails in the creative economy, such as WriteGirl alum, poet and activist Amanda Gorman!

Here are few other alum highlights:

  • Summer Hamzeh is the 2025-2026 California Youth Poet Laureate.
  • Maria Guinnip is an investigative journalist covering immigration and criminal justice.
  • Janel Pineda is a U.S. Central American literature scholar pursuing a PhD at UCLA.
  • Khaila Amazan was named one of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to watch in 2024.
  • Lovely Umayam works in nuclear nonproliferation and won an award from the U.S. Department of State for Innovation in Arms Control.

But all of these outcomes are hard-won. WriteGirl is unique in offering intensive individualized support for girls in critical need of support. Mentors often continue their relationships with their teen mentees for 10 years or more. WriteGirl is an antidote, a rare community where teens feel supported and uplifted. They tell WriteGirl “I feel safe here.” WriteGirl has doubled-down on their efforts, including matching more teens than ever with their own caring mentor, and increasing the frequency of their workshops and services.

As you know, these are unprecedented times. The teens WriteGirl works with have been particularly impacted by cuts to social safety nets, housing insecurity, mental health struggles, and violence.. They are some of the most vulnerable in the U.S. WriteGirl’s LGBTQIA+ teens are particularly vulnerable. For the workshops WriteGirl holds in youth incarceration facilities, WriteGirl offers a rare opportunity for teens to share their feelings and stories, and to be heard by caring writing mentors.

In this moment, with 25 years of success in helping thousands of teens thrive, WriteGirl is seeking financial contributions to support this important lifeline of programming for teens.

I’ve created a fundraiser to support WriteGirl! You can help me raise vital funds for WriteGirl.

Thank you for supporting this cause I care so much about!
